President’s Message

The Basics of Cleaning Wildfire Ash and Odors in Homes

When urban interface wildfires happen, they often leave behind more than just visible damage. Ash, soot, and strong smoke odors can enter into homes and settle on surfaces, contaminate HVAC systems, and float in the indoor airmass for days. For cleaning professionals, understanding the proper way to remove these residues and odors is important. This article outlines a few basic steps of wildfire cleaning. Keep in mind that this is only an introduction. Some homes may need more advanced inspection techniques, industry-specific restoration procedures, and the use of specialized equipment, and professional cleaning and deodorizing products.

Because wildfire ash can contain harmful particles, always wear personal protective equipment (PPE). At minimum, this should include gloves, a half-mask respirator with HEPA (P-100) cartridges, protective coveralls, and eye protection. Safety is just as important as cleaning.
